Developmental Editing

A developmental edit often occurs after a beta read. A book might have an incredible story to tell or information to impart, however, the layout of the chapters might confuse the readers. In this type of edit, I will suggest what information might be taken out for a concise read or if additional chapters are helpful for clarity. I will examine the characters and the arc of the story. Examples of feedback:

The reader needs to know more about why Adam’s parents split up. A large portion of the book centers around how the divorce of his parents negatively influences his life. However, the reader only knows that his parents live in the same city and the mother is remarried. Some backstory could help the reader understand the decisions his mother was making throughout the book. She is often painted in a negative light. Perhaps showing some of the ways she shows Adam’s love would help the reader feel more conflicted about their relationship.

Copy Editing Only

This edit will review and fix your documents for correct spelling, grammar, and syntax. This is ideal for individuals who need a quick review for glaring mistakes. Example:

Janna stumpled across the room looking ate his phone on the nite stand and asked himself “How did this get their”.

Janna stumbled across the room looking at his phone on the nightstand and asked himself, “How did this get there?”

Beta Reading

Are you looking for general feedback on your manuscript? Getting a beta reader is helpful for writers who want to understand how a reader might react to their words. I will read your drafts and provide general feedback on the writing style, plot/outline, and general marketability of your book.

Line & Copy Editing

I provide line editing for books, blog posts, cover letters, and resumes. With a line edit, I will review your writing to ensure the words and structure of sentences have the greatest impact. I will also correct any errors in grammar, spelling, and syntax. Example:

Adam went to his father’s apartment after a long day at school. He was very tired because he did get much sleep. It was times like this he wished his parents were still together.

Approaching the front door, Adam looked at the four separate keys on his chain. He wondered how many tries it would take this time to find the right one. Why did keys to his mother’s house and father’s apartment look exactly alike? He had spent his entire school day trying to stay awake in each of his classes. His mind was protesting as it begged for sleep. Opening the front door seemed to be a tremendous task.

Resume & Cover Letter Review

Drawing from my years of experience leading search committees and reviewing candidates, I will format and edit your resumes and cover letter to help you advance your career.

Common resume and cover letter mistakes:

• Cover letters longer than one page because your paragraphs are not concise.
• Resumes longer than two pages because you don’t want to remove any experiences.
